Crowns and Bridges

What is a crown?

A crown is an artificial tooth cap that the team permanently bonds your existing natural tooth or to a dental implant. Your crown is designed from an impression of your smile, so it fits perfectly in your mouth, feeling and functioning just like your natural teeth.

How can a crown improve my smile?

The team might recommend a crown for any of the following reasons:

  • Restoring a damaged or decayed tooth
  • Replacing a tooth that’s discolored, misshapen, or otherwise unsightly
  • Protecting a weakened tooth from further damage
  • Restoring a tooth’s structural integrity after root canal therapy

When used with a dental implant, a crown can replace a missing tooth.

What is a bridge?

A bridge replaces a tooth that’s missing from your smile. It’s composed of a fake tooth, called a pontic, that’s supported on either side by crowns. The crowns are sealed to the teeth on either side of your missing tooth, leaving the pontic to bridge the gap between the teeth.

If your teeth can’t support crowns, the team can replace your tooth with an alternative bridge like a cantilever bridge or a Maryland bonded bridge.

How can a bridge improve my smile?

By replacing your missing tooth or teeth, bridges improve your smile in a variety of ways. They fill in the unsightly holes left by missing teeth and also help to keep the rest of your teeth in alignment by preventing them from shifting into the empty space.

What’s involved in getting a crown or bridge?

First, the team uses a local anesthetic to numb your tooth and the surrounding tissues, then shaves some enamel from your teeth to make room for your crown or bridge. If you’re getting a crown, they shave enamel from the tooth that’s going to receive the crown. If you’re getting a bridge, they shave enamel from the teeth that are next to your missing tooth.

The team then takes an impression of your smile once your teeth are prepared. They send that impression to a lab that custom-builds your crown or bridge so that it fits perfectly into your smile, and applies a temporary crown or bridge for you to wear while you wait for your permanent crown or bridge.

Once your permanent crown or bridge is ready, you come back to the office. the team checks that it fits comfortably, makes any necessary adjustments, and seals it in place, immediately giving you a beautifully restored smile.
